600×400 Crate Production Line: Machine Size, Cycle Time and Output

The standard Euro footprint is also the standard test of a crate line — here is what it takes to mold it profitably.

Quick answer: A 600×400 mm crate line normally runs one cavity on a 650–850 t machine at 25–35 s, producing 129–144 crates an hour gross, or about 110–122 at 85% OEE. Two cavities need a 1,300–1,450 t machine — which is why most producers keep the tool single. See the one-cavity crate production line setup for the reference configuration.

Why 600×400 is the reference format

The 600×400 mm footprint is the de facto standard for returnable logistics boxes in Europe and beyond. It pairs with 1,200×1,000 mm pallets, carries 20–30 kg loaded, stacks five or six high and nests when empty. Typical parts weigh 2.0–3.0 kg with 2–3.5 mm walls and need food-contact approval if they touch produce, meat, fish or beverages.

That combination — large projected area, thin walls, food contact — drives every downstream choice: clamp force, mold base, cooling layout and steel grade.

Machine size: 650 t is the floor, 850 t is comfort

DKM's clamp-force formula is projected area × 250–300 bar × 1.15. At 2,400 cm², a 600×400 mm crate lands at 690–830 tf, so 650 t is the minimum and 850 t gives margin. The DKM-650 Victor offers 6,500 kN of clamp, 900×900 mm tie bars, 185 mm/s injection speed and a 1,920–3,631 g shot range — enough for a 2.5 kg crate with a single cavity.

Before confirming tonnage, check the mold base. A single-cavity 600×400 tool usually needs a base around 1,000×800 mm; the 650 Victor's 900×900 mm tie-bar clearance accepts tools up to about 800×800 mm, and anything wider moves the project to an 850 t or two-platen machine.

Cycle time: 25–35 s, not 20 s

The 20-second cycle that crate suppliers quote belongs to a smaller 500×300 mm turnover box. DKM's own 2017 field data for a 600×400×350 mm vegetable crate quotes 35–40 s on a 650 t machine and about 2,100 crates a day; a 220–280 mm-tall box runs closer to 25–30 s.

Cooling accounts for 60% or more of that time, so the mold matters more than the machine's dry-cycle speed. Valve-gated hot runners, contoured core cooling and adequate venting are what move a tool from 35 s to 25 s.

Output and annual capacity

At 25–28 s, one cavity produces 129–144 crates an hour gross, or 110–122 at 85% OEE — roughly 2,600–2,900 crates a day and 660,000–730,000 a year on 6,000 running hours. That is the number to compare against demand: a 600×400 line rarely needs a second cavity until annual volume passes about 1.2 million crates.

The mold behind the line

SinoMould builds single-cavity crate tools from 650 to 1,800 t with 738H/NAK80 steel, valve-gated hot runners and 15–20 s cycles at 2.5–3.5 mm wall, quoted at 800,000–1,000,000 cycles and about 60 working days. Steel choice follows volume: 718H or 738H for moderate runs, DIN 1.2344 / H13 for high-volume or abrasive work, S136 for corrosive grades.

Compliance for export crates

The EU PPWR (EU) 2025/40 has applied since 12 August 2026, and from 1 January 2030, 40% of listed transport packaging — crates included — must be reusable within a reuse system, with 100% on own-site and same-Member-State routes. Food-contact crates need an EU 10/2011 declaration of compliance, and recycled content must start at 10% (food-contact non-PET) or 35% (other plastic packaging) by 2030.
